Blackjack History

Blackjack in the king of format it is presently played originated in the French casinos of the 1700s. The game was however called ‘Vingt Et Un’, which is the French for twenty one is one of the first facts about blackjack history. It is said that Vingt Et Un drew on a number of earlier gambling games. The concept of going bust was taken from an Italian game called ‘Seven And A Half’. The other games that contributed to Vingt Et Un were the French games ‘Chemin De Fer’ and ‘French Ferme’ and the Spanish game ‘One And thirty’.

The French took the game to the casinos of the United States in the 1800s. Initially the game was not very popular there. In order to attract customers the casinos began to offer bonus payouts. A popular payout was the player being dealt the jack and ace of spades, which paid out at 10 to 1. This was given the name blackjack. However this payout was soon discontinued. Instead any ace and any card of value ten was paid out at 3 to 2. However the game has been called blackjack since then.

Over the last 50 years blackjack has witnessed a turbulent battle between players and casinos especially since the game is now available at all online casinos. The players continuously evolved ways to beat the house and the casinos kept plugging the loopholes. It began in 1961 with Edward Thorp, a lecturer in mathematics at MIT. He presented a paper that demonstrated if a player kept track of the cards that had been discarded he could beat the house with optimal play. The process of keeping track of cards is popularly known as card counting. One Emmanuel Kimmel financed Thorp with a bankroll of $10,000, which Thorp was able to double in the casinos of Nevada. However it was the team of Ken Uston and Keith Taft that made huge money through card counting in the early 1970s. Uston had developed card-counting techniques. Taft had developed a computer that played perfect blackjack. Taft’s computer was so small that it could b concealed in the clothing. The two made millions of dollars in Atlantic City casinos before they were denied entry. The court held that card counting was legal and the card counters could not be denied entry. The casinos immediately introduced multiple decks, shuffling machines, and early shuffling in order to neutralize card counting. They also appealed to the higher court and had card counting through the use of physical devices declared illegal. The next person to take on the casinos was Stanford Wong, who is known as the Godfather of blackjack. He was able beat the shuffling machines by recognizing their pattern of shuffling. Then in the 1990s a team of MIT students known as the MIT Blackjack Club, won millions of dollars from Las Vegas casinos.
In the mid 1990s online casinos emerged with blackjack games being very popular. Online gaming software developers created new variations in blackjack, which attracted new players to the game. Microgaming introduced blackjack games with progressive jackpots. Playtech introduced Blackjack Switch, a game in which the player was dealt two hands and allowed to switch cards.
